Five Key Interior Design Trends for 2024

The New Year is barely a month away, and with it comes a whole new set of interior design transformations and styles. These will be dictated by a variety of factors – ranging from the financial and practical, to the quirky and idiosyncratic. Here The Bespoke Shutter Company, who supply plantation shutters in and around London, examines five of the biggest upcoming trends – and why shutters can be the common denominator which fits in with all of them.

Sustainability Still Rules

Sustainability means not just following the common trends of using furniture made out of sustainable materials, living walls (full of greenery) and plenty of pot plants, but also means eschewing artificial light and letting the outside in – there’s plenty of well-documented health benefits to natural sunlight and it can often be cheaper than having lights on in your house all day.

Another way of maximising natural light (and give an impression of spaciousness) is to have plenty of full-length mirrors installed; skylights are also expected to be popular in the months ahead.

Sustainability also means making sure you buy something that will last. The increased cost of living means many people are hesitant to replace any furniture, fixtures and fittings in your home as often as they might like to. So, go for something sturdy, durable and long-lasting – wooden furniture rather than bamboo, for instance.

The Floor (and Tile) Show

Fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue believes that statement floors will be making a comeback in 2024.

This means patterned stone or marble floors, rather than carpets or laminated, vinyl, or wooden surfaces. Equally, the floor (and one or more of the walls) could be tiled; large or oversized tiles have a high tactile quality, and they can add a sense of grandeur and personality to spaces.

Next year, kitchen walls are also expected to trend towards wood-effect or marble-effect tiles, even if the tiles themselves are ceramic.

The Home Office is Here to Stay

Flexible working is here to stay, more than three years after the pandemic – and that means so is the home office.

This means that open plan isn’t quite as desirable as it once was, if you need a quiet workspace. Wall partitions, or other soundproofing measures, could be used to solve this particular problem and give you a quiet space to work in at home.

Interior design experts are also predicting that ergonomic furniture – particularly adjustable chairs and desks – will again be popular in 2024, along with other practical items such as shelving and filing cabinets.

On Your Metal

Chrome has often been used in kitchens and bathrooms, on fittings such as taps and sinks.

However, in 2024 it is expected to become more widespread in living rooms and bedrooms, particularly when it comes to lamps and light fixtures. As with larger mirrors, chrome is highly reflective and can create some interesting perspectives, as well as reflecting any natural light around the room.

Vogue believes that warmer metals will also be popular choices in homes, alongside perennial favourites such as unlacquered brass and polished nickel.

Sensible Storage

You can never have enough storage space and, given the number of people who have to accommodate home offices into their living space, this is likely to be truer than ever in 2024.

This doesn't just mean having wardrobes built into alcoves, or installing additional shelves in your home. Items such as window seats are a really good space-saving trick in small bedrooms and kitchens; they are also particularly useful under bay windows (see picture above) where you can combine extra seating with handy additional storage.

Plantation Shutters in London with The Bespoke Shutter Company

One way of ensuring you are on-trend is to have quality wooden shutters installed; we can supply and install these if you live in Herts, Essex or London.

Our shutters are all made out of a naturally-sustainable wood, and you can still let plenty of light in – either by adjusting the angle of the louvres, or by having them completely open.

Alternatively, you can opt for a type which doesn’t cover the full length of your windows – café-style, or tier-on-tier, for instance – and you can leave one or both sections open. If you are working from home, then shutters will shut out extraneous noise and light, giving you the chance to work in peace.

And, whatever interior design effect you go for, you can be sure that plantation shutters will compliment it – they have a classic, timeless quality which goes with either a contemporary or a traditional style.
